With an estimated 30.1m subscriptions in 2017, Venezuela’s mobile market is the sixth largest in Latin America by subscriptions. Venezuela accounts for 4.2% of the region’s total mobile subscriptions. Over the next five years, mobile operators will add a combined 5.7m subscriptions, bringing Venezuela’s total to 35.8m by the end of 2022, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
Despite its challenging economic situation, Venezuela exhibits one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the region, with 51.4% of total mobile subscriptions in 2017. Supported by a sizeable smartphone base, social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are immensely popular in Venezuela.
Boosted by the large smartphone base, 3G represented the majority of total mobile subscriptions with 69.6% by the end of 2017. At 5.6%, Venezuela’s LTE penetration of mobile subscriptions is by far one of the lowest in the region. 4G will see its share increase by a huge margin and reach 41.6% by 2022, driven by LTE network expansions by operators such as Movilnet, which deployed 600 4G/LTE Base Stations in 2017. |
