Innovating New Tools to Manage Wireless Data Demand

As 5G enters the mid-cycle of the fifth generation of wireless cellular networks, mobile global data demand continues to soar, expected to grow around 20 percent annually through 2029. Even as 5G connections surge to nearly two billion, the intensity of new use cases like generative AI across different industries and the consumer sector will pose a significant challenge to the capabilities of wireless networks.

To stay ahead of this data tsunami, 5G Americas member companies take a deep dive into new strategies that could help to alleviate bottlenecks in commercial full-power spectrum availability through spectrum sharing. Additionally, sophisticated capabilities in 5G networks are offering new opportunities in infrastructure sharing through neutral host networks with distributed antenna systems, shared radios, and basebands.

These innovations come at an important time, as international challenges continue to highlight the need for more crucial spectrum bands, like 3-3.4 GHz, 3.6-3.8 GHz, and 10-10.5 GHz. The need for additional intergovernmental and industry cooperation on issues of spectrum harmonization were highlighted at the World Radiocommunication Conference 23 (WRC-23), which laid out new objectives for the upcoming round in WRC-27.

As more 5G-enabled devices become widely available, much more work lies ahead to ensure that 5G, 5G-Advanced, and eventually 6G continue to be globally recognized standards that will continue to connect billions of people and machines together.
